📃 Lena Knilli, 2008 – 2009
We are created and we develop. My possibilities encompass me and determine me. Often I cannot read them. In this self-portrait I am concerned with the ‘points of departure’ for my individual development. One point of departure is presented by my body. My body develops according to a set programme, which I myself can influence only to a certain extend. The circles represent for me innate characteristics. They represent organic, social and cultural ‘codes’, preconditions and instructions, strengths, and weaknesses that I have been given and that I actively carry with me. They are both obvious and at the same time subtle. The circle contains both instructions and possibilities. It is a seed, a secret, a great prize, a seam, a coat button, a point of energy, a point of tension, a push button, a switch, a planet and a universe. It is like this both small and large. The circle sets the figure in relationship to the whole. “The circle represents both distance and proximity. From the outside in, it denotes concentration, makes it possible to find a middle. From inside out, it encompasses ever larger distances and finally becomes a picture for the cosmo”.
